In 1917, Virgil McCrary founded McCrary Well Drilling after learning the trade from a Virginia well driller, starting with a single steam-powered machine. His son, Tom McCrary, joined the family business in 1948 after returning from World War II service in the U.S. Army. The business was renamed McCrary and Son Well Drilling to reflect their partnership. Tom worked alongside his father, mastering the trade and operating the steam-powered rig. In the early 1950s, he upgraded to a churn-style drilling machine, and in 1962, he acquired the first modern era drilling machine in Western North Carolina. Over the following decades, Tom expanded the business, serving homeowners across the region while training his stepson, Matt Parker, to take the reins. Today, Matt continues the family legacy as both the owner and lead well driller.
